My name is Ingrid Schlueter and I've been in Christian radio for 18 years. Of all the trends I've observed, the explosion of the "seeker"-centered megachurches is one of the most disturbing. Mega- churches in America have become absurd to the point where satire is almost impossible. Starbucks franchises and Christian tattoo parlors are now on church property. Rappers, hula praise dancers, contortionists, acupuncturists, liposuctionists, the side show of evangelicalism has an ever expanding cast of performers. The future of evangelicalism is here and it comes as an Elvis impersonator. Among the latest fads is "the Emergent" church idea. Supposedly a more authentic way to worship, the man-centered focus differs little from the status quo. Worse, in a quest for what's real, false teaching is entering through the traditions of the East, like meditation and yoga. This blog is an ongoing source for what is happening in the church. I'd like to comment on an old article of yours about Frank Shaeffer. The Orthodox Church does not teach salvation by works. Everything is God's grace. Everything is a gift of God. The difference between some Protestants and the Orthodox Church is that the Protestants restrict the term "salvation" to a cognitive, verbal assertion (confession) of belief in Christ and his work on the cross. This is sometimes accompanied by a certain emotional state. The Orthodox, on the other hand, include what the Protestants would term "sanctification" in the term "salvation". This is because they see God's salvation as communal and cosmic. God is saving the body, too, and the whole world. We cannot be "saved" (read "sanctified") alone. As far as eternal security is concerned, there are even evangelicals who don't believe in eternal security so this is not a point, generally, of difference between the Protestants and Orthodox.
